Setting up file associations in Windows ensures that your preferred programs automatically open specific file types when you double-click them. The easiest and most direct way to configure this is through the Windows Settings App or directly via File Explorer.
Here are the most straightforward methods to set up your file associations. Method 1: The Right-Click “Open With” Menu (Fastest)
This is the best method if you already have a specific file on your screen and want to quickly change what program opens it permanently. Right-click on the file you want to change. Hover over Open with and click Choose another app. Select your preferred application from the list.
Check the box that says Always use this app to open [file extension] files. Click OK or Always to save the preference.
Method 2: Windows Settings (Best for Customizing Specific File Types)
If you want to configure a file association without tracking down a physical file first, you can look up extensions directly in Windows Settings. For Windows 11: Press the Windows Key + I to launch the Settings menu.
Click on Apps on the left menu pane, then select Default apps.
Use the search bar under “Enter a file type or link type” and type your extension (e.g., .pdf, .txt). Click the app icon that appears next to the file type.
Select your new program from the list and click Set as default. For Windows 10: Open Settings (Windows Key + I) and select Apps. Select Default apps from the left sidebar menu.
Scroll down and click the Choose default apps by file type link.
Locate the extension in the alphabetical list on the left side.
Click the program icon next to it and select your preferred app. Method 3: File Properties Menu
You can also update default applications by digging straight into the file’s properties window. Right-click the file and choose Properties.
Stay on the General tab and look for the line that says Opens with:. Click the Change… button next to it. Pick the application you prefer and select OK.
Click Apply, then OK on the properties screen to lock it in. If you want to tweak this further, tell me:
What specific file extension (like .pdf, .mp4, .html) are you trying to map? Which program do you want to open it?
